UFC came to Philadelphia on Saturday, August 8th. At UFC 101, BJ Penn will defend his UFC lightweight crown for the second time against number one contender Kenny Florian. UFC middleweight top dog, Anderson Silva jumped back to the 205-pound weight class to take on former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin.
Hilo, Hawaii's own, UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn (14-5-1) is on considered one of the best fighters in the world pound for pound will be returning to the lightweight division that he has dominated. At 155 pounds, he is unbeaten at since 2002. BJ Penn has pulverized Jens Pulver, Joe Stevenson, and Sean Sherk in successive lightweight fights. He suffered a set back against Georges St-Pierre’s in the welterweight division in January, but BJ Penn got back to his optimum weight and continues his reign of terror by defeating Kenny Florian to retain the UFC Lightweight Championship
Kenny “KenFlo” Florian (13-4) has done nearly everything in the sport of mixed martial arts in just six years as a pro. He has fought in the middleweight, welterweight, and the lightweight divisions. He earned a spot in the finals on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, and to get there he had to beat some of the best fighters in the world. The only thing Bostonian, Kenny Florian, was missing was a world championship. He had won six fights in a row (with victories over Joe Lauzon, Joe Stevenson, and Roger Huerta), but he lost second shot at the lightweight belt.
34 year old Brazilian Anderson Silva, who has the longest consecutive win streak in UFC history at nine wins, and who has tied the record for most consecutive successful title defenses at five, (beating Dan Henderson, Rich Franklin, Patrick Cote, Thales Leites and more) was not satisfied, so he is took on the light heavyweight division again and defeated Forrest Griffin.
Forest Griffins is a man creditied with causing the explosion of MMA in the USA following the win of his The Ultimate Fighter bout in 2005. With UFC wins over Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua under his belt, the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has truly proved himself in the Octagon and he would not let his lose to Rashad Evans last December 2008 hold him back, so he once again took on Anderson Silva, who gave Griffin his first lose, and lost once again.
